Inscribed at upper right, in a later hand, in graphite, "A. Cuyp". Inscribed on the verso: at center, in black chalk, "105"; at lower left, in graphite, "CUYP / 454"; and at the lower left corner, in another hand (possibly that of Engelberts), in graphite, "CJ120: / IS ls / dJ / RS XLO".
Watermark: Fleur-de-lis within a shield, ver 4 and letter "W", fragment of bottom, (similar to Heawood, no. 1761: Schieland, 1625).

Possibly Christian Josi (before 1765-1828), London; possibly M. de Roveray (according to Josi); possibly Engelbert Michaël Engelberts (1773-1843), Hoorn; his sale, Amsterdam, van der Vries, 14ff. December 1807; Charles Fairfax Murray (1849-1919), London and Florence; from whom purchased through Galerie Alexandre Imbert, Rome, in 1909 by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York (no mark; see Lugt 1509); his son, J. P. Morgan, Jr. (1867-1943), New York.
