The pendant drawing also in black chalk of a cow in a field facing right, inscribed by the artist on the verso, "N 399 inv / 1783", was sold in Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 21 March 1977, lot 144, and is now in the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Gordon, Brookline, Mass. More highly finished watercolor versions of both chalk studies are in the Rijksprentenkabinet, Amsterdam (signed and dated 1783; Inv. nos. 296 and 296).

Inscription: 

Inscribed and dated on the verso, at lower left, by the artist, in brown ink, "N 398 inv / 1783"; and at lower center, in another hand, in graphite, "Cats".
