Inscribed throughout the sheet in pen and brown ink, "General wash ochre and light red / twice over; Br Terra di Sienna over the foreground; Vermillion twice over the shades of the clouds / distances and middle ground as low as the [crossed out] water; Light red on the castle / walls; Try on the castle and wooded hill / under the same ochre and blue / twice over except the distant / extremities - / Green of the foreground / raw T: Sienna and blue / touched a little with burnt T: Sienna; Light / over / parts of / the / Distant / Trees; Burnt Umber blue, and / liquid brown / for the great / Tree on the / foreground."
