Inscribed by the artist, in pen and brown ink, at left, "Fait pour M. Sedaine en mars 1771"; in darker ink, below, "Gabriel de St Aubin ft"; in crayon, "M. de Grandpré"; in brush and brown ink, at right, "peint en mars 1772".
