Landscape, with Shepherds Watering Their Cattle in a Pool
ca. 1646-1650
Brown wash over graphite on paper.
6 inches (150 mm), circular, diameter
Purchased by Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913) in 1909.
III, 80
Notes:

This roundel is related to a painting commissioned in 1646 for an unknown patron in Avignon, depicting a Pastoral Landscape with the Flight Into Egypt (Nivaagaard Collection, Denmark; 15NMK). The painting is recorded in Claude's Liber Veritatis (British Museum, London, no. 104). The present roundel is a reduction of the composition based on the Liber Veritatis drawing, and, like III, 81, it may have been preceded by a preliminary pen drawing. In reducing the composition to this format, Claude simplified the landscape and figures, leaving the Holy Family out of this small-scale version.
