A museum and independent research library, the Morgan Library & Museum began as the personal library of financier, collector, and cultural benefactor John Pierpont Morgan (1837–1913). As early as 1890, Morgan had begun to assemble a collection of illuminated, literary, and historical manuscripts, early printed books, and old master drawings and prints.

The idea of cutting up a medieval manuscript is almost unthinkable today. Historically, however, this practice was relatively common, and it reached a fever pitch in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

This exhibition is the first in the United States in over thirty years to celebrate these talented draftsmen and marks the promised gift to the Morgan of a group of Bibiena drawings from the collection of Jules Fisher, the Tony-winning lighting designer.

This exhibition presents some of the Morgan’s greatest portrait drawings from a collection of works on paper that is internationally recognized for its depth and quality.

The Morgan Library & Museum celebrates the gift of more than 130 drawings and photographs from the collection of Karen B. Cohen with the exhibition Into the Woods: Naturalism, Landscape, and Labor.

As part of the Bicentenary celebrations of the Royal Philharmonic Society, the Morgan will display two historic copyist scores of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, marking the first time they have been brought together since their creation in 1824.
