Lion attacking horned animal crossed with second lion that attacks small horned animal

between 3100 B.C. and 2350 B.C.
chalcocite
29 x 15 mm
Morgan Seal 1086
Provenance:
Acquired by Pierpont Morgan sometime between 1885 and 1908.
Notes:

"The material of which this cylinder is fashioned--a copper ore--is very rarely used for Mesopotamian cylinders, whereas a number of Hittite stamp seals are made of it. This might indicate that the piece was produced in Asia Minor. It may be dated in or after the Early Dynastic period, though the arrangement of its figures deviates from that in typical Early Dynastic contest friezes (94)."--Porada, CANES, p. 154
