          Notes
Extremely fine parallel lines which give the effect of drypoint are used to shade Faust's robe, particularly on the shoulders and lapels, as well as the pile of books on the right. Vertical strokes have been added to the third windowpane down, on the extreme right. The hand holding the disk is an example of fresh drypoint work. (Boston 1969, no. 48)
