In 1610, contemplating retiring from the theater and returning to Stratford-upon-Avon, the 46-year-old Shakespeare decided to write a play about a 46-year-old man who recovers a wife and a daughter whom he had deeply injured and whom he believed he had irrevocably lost. Stephen Greenblatt, John Cogan University Professor of the Humanities, Harvard University, will lecture on Shakespeare’s most haunting exploration of the dream of a second life, The Winter’s Tale. This program is in collaboration with The Anthony Hecht Lectures in the Humanities at Bard College.
