Panel | Tarot in Art History

In this wide-ranging discussion about the exhibition Tarot! Renaissance Symbols, Modern Visions, curators Joshua O’Driscoll, Claire Gilman, and Frank Trujillo are joined by art historian Susan Aberth and artist Ali Banisadr to explore the origins of tarot in Renaissance Italy and its ongoing relevance as a source of inspiration for artists in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Claire Gilman is the Acquavella Curator and Department Head of Modern and Contemporary Drawings at the Morgan Library & Museum, and a co-curator of the exhibition.

Joshua O’Driscoll is the Melvin R. Seiden Curator and Department Head of Medieval and Renaissance Manuscripts at the Morgan Library & Museum, and a co-curator of the exhibition.

Frank Trujillo is the Drue Heinz Book Conservator at the Morgan Library & Museum, and a co-curator of the exhibition.

Susan Aberth is the Edith C. Blum Professor of Art History at Bard College. She is the author of Leonora Carrington: Surrealism, Alchemy, and Art (Lund Humphries, 2004).

Ali Banisadr is a contemporary artist represented in the exhibition.

This discussion will take place in Gilder Lehrman Hall on the Ground Floor. Doors to the Hall will open 30 minutes before the program begins. While registration is required, seating is first come, first served. Tarot! Renaissance Symbols, Modern Visions will be open to program attendees starting at 5:30 PM.
