Told in flashback as Caravaggio (Nigel Terry) lies dying in poverty, the film tells the story of the artist’s life through his brilliant, nearly blasphemous paintings and a vicious love triangle involving his model Ranuccio (Sean Bean) and his wife, Lena (Tilda Swinton). Director Derek Jarman recreates the look and color of the Renaissance master’s original paintings while exploring the homoerotic subtext of his work. Winner of the Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Run Time: 1h 33 min. R.
