Paragon Ragtime Orchestra is the world’s only year-round, professional ensemble re-creating “America’s Original Music”—the syncopated sounds of America’s popular music from the 1890s to the 1920s period. Founded in 1987 by Rick Benjamin, the Orchestra made its formal debut at Alice Tully Hall 38 years ago—the first concert ever presented at Lincoln Center by such an ensemble. Since then, the Orchestra has appeared at hundreds of leading venues throughout the world. The 12-piece Paragon Ragtime Orchestra utilizes original arrangements of music from, typically, the 1890s through the 1920s, and has released over twenty recordings. A stickler for creating the authentic sound of the period, the Orchestra performs only with musical instruments manufactured before 1923.
This concert takes place in Gilder Lehrman Hall on the Ground Floor. Doors to the Hall will open 30 minutes before the concert begins. Attendees are invited to view Ragtime: Cakewalk in Pianoland before the concert from 5:30 to 7 PM.
