Explore the history of ragtime in this one-man, multimedia performance by pianist John Davis. Blending live piano performance with projections and commentary, Davis introduces audiences to music from his personal collection of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century musical African Americana, on view in Ragtime: Cakewalk in Pianoland.

Pianist, writer, and co-curator of Ragtime: Cakewalk in Pianoland, John Davis has excavated and disseminated a previously buried African American roots music. A recipient of the 2022-2023 Rome Prize, Davis has performed in festivals and concert halls internationally, including at Alice Tully Hall, Wigmore Hall, the Gilmore Keyboard Festival, the Great Hall at the Moscow Conservatory, the National Centre for the Performing Arts (India), and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. He has released three albums to date, John Davis Plays Blind Tom; Marshfield Tornado: John Davis Plays Blind Boone; and Hailey’s Comet: Around the Piano with Mark Twain & John Davis. Davis is a Steinway artist.
This concert takes place in Gilder Lehrman Hall on the Ground Floor. Doors to the Hall will open 30 minutes before the concert begins. Attendees are invited to view Ragtime: Cakewalk in Pianoland before the concert from 5:30 to 7 PM.
