  Notes
              Edition of 150.
Erich Heckel was a founding member of the Brücke (Bridge) group of expressionist artists in 1905. Seeking to break from traditional German painting, Heckel and his cohort looked to the work of Gauguin, Van Gogh, and to collections of non-European art for inspiration. The bold, angular treatment of this self-portrait is reminiscent of African masks. Woodcut is a medium in which Heckel was particularly prolific and which influenced his drawing style.
