"My dear, I was born, it seems, prejudiced against living as human beings have to live, and grew up unwillingly, and was taken by surprise by every joy I found, though I found many. ... And what power there was the second time, went into these pages. ... But they are the best I could do; so if the results of the rest of my lifetime are rich enough to make a fruitless period in any way remarkable, I shall be proud of them. ... And it was the morning after this story was completed that you brought under your arm the loveliest porte-bonheur in the world - whose charm at last has begun to work. Glenway, September 15, 1930"; author's signature in ink on page [7] as issued.
