"*This poem first appeared in the Vanity fair for June, 1917. Owing to lack of space, thirty-five lines were omitted. These have now been restored and the work is intact. It has been referred to as a 'portrait' of Henry McBride, the art critic. It is in fact a genre picture and Mr. McBride is but one of the personages. The 'political' quality of Miss Stein's caricature will not be misapprehended by students of her work"--Title page.
