Inscriptions/Markings
Author's inscription in ink on preliminary pages: My dear Stewart: You ask me for some "sage remarks". A rather difficult request to gratify. But here is a thing which is in my mind. Until recently I have thought rather poorly of the profession of letters: considering it a sorry occupation for a grown man. But of late it has been borne in upon my mind that there are thousands of successful men of action to be found before you shall find even one who can take the most vivid thought and so word it that it must [underlined] mean the same thing to any man at anytime, and so I raise my diminished head. Wishing you the same, yours truly [signed] E.M. Rhodes.
