Notes
Portrait and photographic illustration affixed to pages [vi] and [277].
Photographic illustration of skyline of San Francisco on four pages, two folded leaves.
Photographic illustrations are reproductions of photographs from various archival sources compiled by Phelps-Schaefer Lithographics.
"The design of the book reflects the spirit of the period in which it was written ... Typographically reminiscent of a late-twenties stylishness identified with the author, this layout should also recall the plain presentation of the novel's first, lurid serialization, even though printed now on cotton-fiber rather than wood-pulp paper. The illustrations are taken from photographs of San Francisco Bay Area locations named or established by Hammett in the narrative. Most of these pictures were shot around the time of the actual setting of the story, five days during 1928"--Page ix.
"Limited to 400 copies, printed ... under the direction of Andrew Hoyem ... The types are Bodoni semi-bold and Corvinus medium. Monotype composition is by Mackenzie-Harris. Photo-lithography is by Phelps-Schaefer. The paper is Byron-Weston Linen Record. Binding is by the Schuberth Bookbindery. This book is the eleventh publication of the press"--Colophon.
