Autograph letter (2 p.) dated 16 July 1856, to Simeon, c. 200 words offering this copy containing "a few corrections and additions which I made at a time when I expected a second edition might soon be required" and which are "material improvements", laid in front of book.
There are deletions or additions on p. 3, 5, 12, 14, 15, 22, 33, (4 lines), 38, 39, 53, 59 (8 lines), 61, 66 (4 lines), 87 (addd section of "Life of Life," 16 lines), 97, 101, 104 (8 lines, 105, 117, 118, 119, 120 (12 lines, 124, 126 (added section, "Rejoice Evermore," (12 line), 132-134 (added section of 36 lines), 138, 147-l50, 156, 164 (4 lines, 165,170,180-182, 187, 188. In all, 41 pages are affected and the additions amount to over 750 words. Some of this material appears in the 2nd ed. of 1858 but some does not, and there are many other alterations. This volume, then, represents an intermediate state of the text.
