Description
[8], CXCVI leaves ; 23 cm (4to)
Inscriptions/Markings
Initials unrealized. Marginal notations in several contemporary hands, mainly throughout leaves 1-60.
Provenance
Two unidentified 16th/17th-century monastic (likely Dominican, ending "ord. pred.") provenance inscriptions, abraded (leaf a1r) and shelfmark "B V" painted in red and black on spine; John F. Fleming; Pierpont Morgan Library, gift of John Fleming, 1981.
Binding
16th-century blind-tooled tanned sheep over wooden boards, attributed to the Czech workshop Blüte X-förmig frei II (Einhorn vor Sternen) (EBDB w002831, active 1481-1518; localized by Sprandel-Kraft "entirely likely" to the diocese of Würzburg); rebacked with breaks and losses to spine. Vellum manuscript leaves (perhaps Carolingian, unidentified text but citing works by Cicero, Sallust, Cornelius Nepos, and others, frequent Greek incipits/keywords) used as pastedowns and binding reinforcement. Two clasps, missing; evidence of former chain attached to rear board.
