The first American edition of the first published volume of poetry by a Black American author. Issued in Philadelphia following Wheatley's death in 1784, Wheatley's Poems on various subjects, religious and moral was originally published in London in 1773, following unsuccessful initial attempts to secure an adequate number of subscribers to finance publication of the book in Boston.
