Title within an architectural woodcut border; text and maps have ornamental woodcut borders; initials historiated with geometrical projections and surveying instruments.
Maps (sigs. 1-[50] have descriptive letterpress on versos, except for the "Orbis typvs vniversalis" signed "L.F. 1522" (Lorenz Fries). Those with maps 8, 33, 37, 39 and 45 have the initials J.H. (Joh. Herbst) in the borders; woodcut initials and diagrams. On leaf 69b is Durer's armillarysphere.
"Index Ptolomaei copiosvs ... " (sigs. a-f) has special t.p. with architectural woodcut border.
Fourth Strassburg edition, translated by Pirckheimer. The woodcut maps, with the exception of "Quinta Asie Tabula" are from the same blocks as those of the 1522 edition. The last map "Orbis typus universalis" by Lorenz Fries, is the first map in a Ptolemy edition in which the name America is used.
Maps 28, 34, 49 and 50 relate to America. The account of the discoveries of Columbus and others is on the back of Map 28.
