American “Hard Times” tokens were produced in 1838 for the American Anti-Slavery Society, based on the 1787 design by Josiah Wedgwood on behalf of the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade (London).

Summary
Copper hard times token. Obverse, a black woman on one knee, arms shackled, inscription around perimeter: Am I not a woman & a sister 1838; reverse, "Liberty 1838" within wreath surrounded by the words "United States of America" (the “N” in United States is backwards “N”).
