Inscriptions/Markings
On the paste-downs and fly-leaves of the three volumes, John Steinbeck has inscribed in pencil lists of page references and historical characters' names; notes on the paste-downs directly address "Gadg" (Elia Kazan), to whom Steinbeck loaned these volumes during the plannig stages of Viva Zapata!. At head of t. II paste-down: "Picture notes for the film Viva Zapata. / Dear Gadg = Here are two volumes which should solve all of your problems for casting, costume, equipment...physical types and posture. Rarely has a director had so much compact material. Our film Zapata should be the most accurate that can be imagined....." Paste-down of t. I begins: "Dear Gadg : Finally I have rounded up this first volume of the Historia Grafica de la Revolucion..... I have gone over the pictures carefully and made some notes for your help..."
