Notes
Caption title.
Print illustrating one of the many popular anecdotes and comic narratives concerning the quasi legendary figure of the duc de Roquelaire, recorded from the 17th century onward, and possibly inspired in part by the life of the historical Gaston-Jean-Baptiste, duc de Roquelaure (1617-1683). the duc de Roquelaire, having been exiled by the King of France and specifically forbidden to set foot on French soil, contrives to return to France standing in a cart filled with Spanish soil, thereby circumventing the literal terms of his banishment.
Library's copy trimmed to image, with possible loss of signatures and/or imprint, and with the caption title and text retained, and mounted into a scrapbook of assorted prints, souvenirs, and pieces of printed and manuscript memorabilia, compiled by former owner Flora Macleod circa 1827-1830. See PML 147623.
