Provenance
Likely Nicolas Confais, 17th-century dance master, given to: Daniel Dumonstier (1574-1646), inscription: "Livre est a Daniel Dumonstier. Et [??] este donne par monsieur Confais ce 8 de november 1611" (title page) with multiple inscriptions "Ce livre est a Daniel Dumonstier" throughout text and a manuscript catalogue of his books: "Catologue [sic] de mes vieuls Romans" and "Catologue des plus ressents" (front pastedown), the first work listed under Romans is Perceforest (PML 31541-43); Gregory Lewis Way (1756-1799), his sale, Sotheby's, 1 July 1881, lot 180 for £6 to Wilson, with later inscription: "From Gregory Lewis Way's Sale 1881" (front endleaf 1 recto); Major E.W. Late-16th/early-17th century French blind-tooled calf over paper boards (30 x 21.5 cm), sewn on 6 supports; rebacked and repaired at edges. Plain paper pastedowns and endleaves; gilt and gauffered edges. 2 fore-edge ties, missing.
