Creator
Charlet, Nicolas-Toussaint, 1792-1845.
Published
Paris : Gihaut frères : (Mon. Aumont) François Delarue; London : Gambard Junin et Co., [1845]
Credit line
Purchased as the gift of Mrs. Charles Engelhard and children in memory of Mr. Charles Engelhard, 1974.
Notes
Title from front cover of (distributor's?) binding.
Each lithograph except no. 12 is captioned Etude à l'estompe exécutées sur pierre par Charlet and reproduced inside an octagonal gold frame, with the printer's name and (one of two) imprint statements lettered in gold.
Plates 1-2, 7-12 bear the imprint of Gihaut Frères; pl. 3-6 are blind-embossed with an eagle or falcon and show the imprint: (Mon. Aumont) François Delarue; London, Gambard Junin et Co, Mar15/45.
Presumably issued by Aubert et cie using remaindered plates printed by Auguste Bry, the latter of which were published and sold individually and as albums both by François Delarue and Gihaut frères in 1845. The front wrapper of Delarue's edition bore the title Etudes à l'estompe exécutées sur pierre par Charlet; Gihaut apparently advertised their plates as Croquis à l'estompe: 12 Études de tête et Groupes de Figures entières.
La Combe groups these and an additional plate numbered 1 (no. 987, not present in this copy) under the title Croquis à l'estompe et au lavis. His attribution of specific plates to particular publishers is partly contradicted by surviving evidence.

Description
12 numbered leaves of plates, [3], 2-14 pages ; 39 cm
Inscriptions/Markings
The inside front and back covers, two pages of the Aubert catalog, and the recto and verso of rear free endpaper contain approximately a dozen small pencil sketches of faces and figures, several graphite marks and watercolor paint splotches, as well as some lines or small ticks next to listings in Aubert's catalog, particularly albums of study and items by Daumier. The name Leenhoff is present on the verso of the endleaf. The words 'Croquis de Manet enfant' are inscribed in pencil at the top of most relevant leaves.
Provenance
From the library of Edouard Manet, with his monogram wax seal on the cover. This album was an end-of-year 1845 or New Years Day 1846 gift from his maternal uncle and godfather, Edmond Edouard Fournier (1800-1865); by descent to Manet's wife Suzanne Leenhoff and her son Léon Leenhoff; acquired by Adolphe Tabarant probably before 1923; by descent to his daughter Lucienne Tabarant and sold by her to Mina Curtiss in 1960; purchased by the Morgan from Mina Curtiss in 1974.
Summary
An album of twelve numbered plates, followed by a 14-page publisher's catalog issued by Aubert et cie (Paris: imprimé par Plon Frères, [1845]).
Binding
Dark blue blind-stamped cloth over boards, stamped in gold 'Etudes par Charlet.' on front cover, presumably bound for or by the distributor. The front cover of the album has a black wax seal showing the initials E. M., which, according to the provenance note laid into this copy, was applied to the binding by Suzanne Manet after the artist's death.
