Inscribed on the first leaf to Gwendolyn Brooks and Henry Blakely: "For my dear friends Henry and Gwendolyn, here's an echo of bygone days which - I hope - will never return,and I know you do too. Best from Jack, the poor man's Steinbeck, March 20, 1963, and snowing like all get-out, 'can spring be far behind?'" With some underlining and other marks presumably by Brooks.
