Notes
Constitutes the seventh part, sole issue of the first Latin edition of Theodor de Bry's Great voyages, printed in fourteen parts, in Latin, German, French, and English, in Frankfurt am Main, Oppenheim, and Hanau from 1590-1644, and the Elenchus, an outline of the thirteen Latin parts, published by Matthias Merian in Frankfurt am Main in 1634.
This work has been identified as the sole issue of part seven of the first Latin edition of the Great voyages by Church.
Place and date of publication supplied by Church.
The sole issue of Latin part seven can be identified by the text printed regularly, and not in double columns; there is no small mark "17" on the plinth of the left hand pier on title page, and by the inclusion of the sole illustration on p. 7.
Latin translation, by Gotard Artus, of: Das VII. Theil Americae. Warhafftige und liebliche Beschreibung etlicher fürnemen indianischen Landtschafften und Insulen, first printed in Frankfurt am Main, 1597, but which was first printed as volume 2 of: Erst [-ander] Theil dieses Weltbuchs, von newen erfundnen Landtschafften / by Sebastian Franck, Frankfurt am Main, 1567 under title: Warhafftige Beschreibunge aller und mancherley sorgfeltigen schiffarten, which was also printed in: Neue Welt: das ist, Warhafftige Beschreibunge aller schönen Historien von Erfindung viler vnbekanten Königreichen, Landschafften, Insulen unnd Stedten, also printed Frankfurt am Main, 1567.
This part contains an account of the voyages of Ulrich Schmidel (Latin Ulricus Faber) to Brazil and Paraguay in 1535-1553. He is one of the first who wrote about that part of America. The narrative was originally written in Germany by Schmidel himself and published for the first time in 1597 [actually first printed in Frankfurt am Main, 1567, see translation note above] in part VII of the German edition of the Great Voyages. Two Latin versions were printed this same year, -- this, which was translated by Gotard Artus of Frankfurt, and one by Hulsius. Cf. Church 161.
Contains no illustrations other than the scene of port and houses on p. 7; Church states that the plates for this part were originally published at the end of the text of part VIII of the Latin edition of the Great voyages, printed Frankfurt am Main, 1599. -- Church 161.
Signatures: A-H⁴ (H4 blank).
Fully engraved and illustrated title page; engraved head and tail pieces; initials and printed marginalia.
Library's copy is 1st issue and has last blank leaf.
