Needham, citing Sydney Cockerell, dates Morris's creation of this decorated proof for the first page of the Kelmscott Chaucer to February of 1893.
Trial of the first page of text for the Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Chaucer, consisting of a proof impression of the letterpress with an impression of W.H. Hooper's wood engraving after Edward Burne-Jones pasted in place at the head of the printed text, and the decorative border, initial "WHAN", frame for the illustration, and two-line head-title executed by William Morris in black ink and china white over graphite.
"The setting of this proof is different from that of the finished Chaucer, and a different initial B is used here."--Needham.
One of a group of four layouts in an early state: the text is printed, with woodcuts pasted in place and borders added in china white.
