The two figures after designs by Claude Gillot are recognizably based on figures featured in a drawing of four studies of figures in theatrical costume which originally formed part of an album of thirty-three drawings of theatrical subjects by Claude Gillot; the bound collection of drawings since broken up and the bulk of the individual drawings sold in 2004 by Galerie de Bayser. Forms part of a collection of 586 etchings by and after Claude Gillot, mounted into a bound album by a former owner, with letterpress title page reading "Oeuvres de Gillot." (see PML 198162).

Summary
Two theatrical portraits or costume studies showing two actors standing full-length, dressed in the style of gardeners or country gentlemen; the figure at left stands facing forward with his hands in his pockets, wearing an open coat with lace collar over a fitted "peplum" shirt or doublet, with loose, knee-length "petticoat" breeches, and a tricorn hat with a wide brim; the figure at right stands facing three-quarters to the left, dressed in a long coat, petticoat breeches, and holding a wide brimmed hat under his arm.
