Engraving by Gillot issued as a headpiece illustration on page 72 (Book II, fable 3), of M. de la Motte's "Fables nouvelles" (Paris : Gregoire Dupuis, 1719).
Forms part of a collection of 586 etchings by and after Claude Gillot, mounted into a bound album by a former owner, with letterpress title page reading "Oeuvres de Gillot." (see PML 198162).

Summary:
Illustration shows the interior of a kitchen, with a child standing on a chair at left, crying because he cannot remove his hand from a pot on the table; a male peasant is behind the child, leaning on the chair at far left; at right, a woman leans on the edge of the table, watching the child and mocking him.
