Forms part of a collection of 586 etchings by and after Claude Gillot, mounted into a bound album by a former owner, with letterpress title page reading "Oeuvres de Gillot." (see PML 198162).

Summary
Illustration shows a small boat on the river Styx, at right, filled with souls of the dead; standing on the prow of the boat is Charon, with an oar in his left hand, leaning over a passenger, who has just jumped into the water to escape the toll; at right, on the banks of the river, a hooded figure in a long robe prepares to board the boat; beyond, at left, crenellated walls of a town are engulfed in flames.
