Etched state of an engraving by Gillot issued as a headpiece illustration on page 314 (Book V, fable 8), of M. de la Motte's "Fables nouvelles" (Paris : Gregoire Dupuis, 1719).
Forms part of a collection of 586 etchings by and after Claude Gillot, mounted into a bound album by a former owner, with letterpress title page reading "Oeuvres de Gillot." (see PML 198162).

Summary:
Illustration shows a fox taking refuge in a lion's den at center; the lion can be seen at far right, lying down; at far left, at the entrance of the cave, a hunter pursues the fox, holding a spear in his left hand.
