Etched state of an engraving by Gillot issued as a headpiece illustration on page 349 (Book V, fable 18), of M. de la Motte's "Fables nouvelles" (Paris : Gregoire Dupuis, 1719).
Sheet closely trimmed within plate mark.
Forms part of a collection of 586 etchings by and after Claude Gillot, mounted into a bound album by a former owner, with letterpress title page reading "Oeuvres de Gillot." (see PML 198162).
Illustration shows, in the immediate foreground, a palm tree has fallen on the ground; behind it, at left, an elephant lifts up a hunter with its trunk, throwing him over its back; the hunter holds a bow in his left hand, with arms flailing; to the right, three elephants can be seen, watching the hunter.
