Proof impression on india paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate page 240 of William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Signed with the engraver's monogram at lower left.
An impression of the later, corrected, state, after the design was recut to replace the some of the dark shadowing on Chaucer's neck and a knuckle was added to his index finger.
