Proof impression on smooth proof paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate page 223, in William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Printed within decorative floral and foliate border designed by William Morris, evidently a trial impression, as a different border was ultimately chosen for publication.
Signed with Hooper's monogram at lower right.
