Notes
Proof impression on wove paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate page 163, "The franklin's tale", in William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Signed with Hooper's monogram at lower left.
Uncorrected state, before lines on the faces of Dorigen and Aurelius were removed, lines defining the rocks were retouched so that they did not touch the outlines of the figures, and areas of the grass were retouched to make them lighter.
Sheet trimmed to image.
