Proof on laid proof paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate "The legend of good women", page 438 of William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Signed by the engraver with his monogram at lower left.
Before final corrections, an intermediary state between that in PML 76922.57A and the finished state.

Touched by the artist in china white in two place with instructions to the engraver to lighten an area on Theseus's upper arm and a detail of the background; signed with Burne-Jones's initials in pencil and annotated "Corrections made" at bottom; numbered "65" in pencil at upper left and "p. 438" at lower right.
