Proof on india paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate "The romaunt of the rose", page 257 of William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Signed with the engraver's monogram at lower left.
Uncorrected state, before the ankles of two of the dancing figures and the drapery of a third were retouched by the engraver.
