Proof on india proof paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate "The romaunt of the rose", page 252 of William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Signed with the engraver's monogram at lower left.
Before the final retouching of the faces and hair of the two figures by the engraver (for example, the removal of the line descending from the lower lid of the figure on the left).
