Proof impression on laid paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate "The romaunt of the rose", page 243 of William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Signed with the engraver's monogram at lower right.
Corrected state, after the rocks at the center of the design were retouched by the engraver to make them lighter.
