Notes
Proof impression on smooth proof paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate page 169, "The franklin's tale", in William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Corrected state, after areas of the print at the water's edge, the grass in the foreground, and the Man's face were retouched by the engraver.
Printed within a foliate border designed by William Morris; evidently a trial impression, as a different border was ultimately chosen for publication.
