Notes
Proof impression on india paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate page 165, "The franklin's tale", in William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Signed with Hooper's monogram at lower left.
An impression of the later, corrected, state, after the design was extensively recut to replace the heavy shading on the drapery and faces of the figures, originally rendered in short horizontal lines, with vertical lines; with the addition of the flowers in front of the figure of Arveragus, at left, and after the overall design was lightened by the refinement of the wood engraved lines throughout.
