Proof impression on smooth proof paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate page 132, "The clerk's tale", in William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Signed with Hooper's monogram at lower right.
An unfinished state, before the thin outlines were introduced by the engraver to Walter's knee and the top of his helmet.
