Notes
Proof impression on india proof paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate page 139, "The clerk's tale", in William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Signed with Hooper's monogram at lower left.
An uncorrected state of Hooper's wood engraving after Burne-Jones, before the lines were reduced in Griselda's palm and the dark line in the center of the floor was retouched.
Printed within a floral and foliate border designed by William Morris; evidently a trial impression, as a different border was ultimately chosen for publication.
