Proof impression on wove paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate page 127, "The clerk's tale", in William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
Early state, before several small lines were removed from the design by the engraver, including the area to the right of Griselda's left hand, the ground below her raised heel, the rocks in the background above the horse's back, the foliage in the foreground, etc.
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
