Notes
Proof impression on smooth vellum paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate page 115, "The Wife of Bath's tale", in William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Signed with Hooper's monogram at lower right.
Printed within decorative grapevine border designed by William Morris; evidently a trial impression, with a different border than that ultimately chosen for publication.
Later state of Hooper's wood engraving, with dark spaces between the woman's toes removed and areas of the walls lightened at right, but before the lower portion of the mirror was fully retouched to make it lighter.
