Proof impression on laid paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate page 115, "The Wife of Bath's tale", in William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Signed with Hooper's monogram at lower right.
Ealy state of Hooper's wood engraving, with dark spaces between the woman's toes, and before the lower portion of the mirror was lightened with additional engraving.
