Notes
Proof impression on smooth vellum paper of a wood engraving by William Harcourt Hooper after a design by Edward Burne-Jones to illustrate page 114, "The Wife of Bath's tale", in William Morris's Kelmscott Press edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer (Hammersmith : Printed by William Morris at the Kelmscott Press, 8 May 1896).
From a drawing by Burne-Jones, the design reworked for transfer to woodblock by Robert Catterson-Smith, and subsequently engraved by William Harcourt Hooper.
Signed with Hooper's monogram at lower right.
Retouched state of Hooper's wood engraving, with the upper portion of the line running on the knight's tunic sleeve removed and several areas of the print, including the old woman's knee, lightened by the removal of lines by the engraver; printed within decorative border.
Printed within an oakleaf and acorn border designed by William Morris; evidently a trial impression, as a different border was ultimately chosen for publication.
